General William Booth, Crime Fighter
Salinas, California is famous for being an agricultural center and the hometown of Nobel Prize winning author John Steinbeck. The city has also become known for its crime rate: higher than the national average in several key categories such as violent crimes, robberies, aggravated assaults, and motor vehicle thefts. Salinas Police Chief Louis Fetherolf is asking members of the community to step up their own personal efforts to combat crime. Salvation Army Major Kris Potter responded by creating a voluntary program to supply local businesses with resources so they can recommend assistance providers to crime victims and witnesses who are in need of help.

Remembering Hurricane Katrina
According to Wikipedia, Katrina first made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane just North of Miami, Florida exactly five years ago today on August 25, 2005. Then it hit again on August 29 along the Central Gulf Coast near Buras-Triumph, Louisiana as a Category 4 storm.

12,000 Students Nationwide Awarded Back-to-School Shopping Spree from Target and The Salvation Army
On Tuesday, Aug. 10, more than 12,000 students in need will have the opportunity to visit Target stores nationwide and purchase backpacks, calculators, pens and pencils, art supplies, binders, clothing and other must-have supplies just in time for back-to-school. The Target School Spree will help kids across the country gear up for the upcoming academic year.

Fire Destroys Property, but not a Neighborhood
Bruce Burson's wife died four months ago and last week's Old West Ranch fire took almost everything else. Thankfully, he still has good neighbors. Even though they don't know each other well, a man named Buz Grantham is organizing an effort to help Burson stay on his land. He's getting help from The Salvation Army, the American Red Cross, other neighbors, local businesses, churches and firefighters.

Food Shortage Hits Salvation Army in Riverside, CA
As employment increases and social security benefits decrease, people in the community of Riverside, Californiaࠖ especially senior citizensࠖ are requesting so much food assistance that The Salvation Army caᮒt keep up! Last June 893 people were helped with a variety of social services, including 375 food boxes. In June 2010ࠖ a year we hoped would be better than lastࠖ requests for assistance are up to 1,101 with distribution of 445 food boxes.

Modesto Service Clubs Team Up to Offer Medical / Dental Care

38 Baja Earthquake Survivors Take Shelter at El Centro Salvation Army
The Salvation Army is preparing for eleven families at its Corps Community Center shelter at 375 N 5th Street in El Centro. Those with quake damage to their homes will find a hot meal and safe haven in the shelter usually reserved for the homeless.
